Thirty8

Thirty8 is the restaurant that opened in the Grand Hyatt last year.  David decided to take some of his employees there one night.  The food was great and of course the view was wonderful.

Marini's on 57

David wanted to take me to this restaurant before we came home.  He had been with Rowan but it opened the year that I was home so we went one Friday night.  It is located on the 57th floor of the 3rd Petronas Tower.  The food was wonderful and the view was even better.

The flat area on the left is where the 4th Petronas Tower is being built.

High Tea

My friend Carol Antell and I went to the Majestic Hotel for High Tea one day.  The Majestic is the historial hotel in Kuala Lumpur.  It is located near the railway station and was built in 1932 as a 51 room hotel.  During World War II, it was used as a transit camp by the Japanese. We chose to have our tea in the Orchid Conservatory.  As you can tell from the pictures it was a beautiful place.

Penang

Our latest trip was to Penang.  Penang is a state located on the northeast coast of Peninsular Malaysia by the Strait of Malacca.  Population is 1.6 million and was founded in 1786.  It is the second smallest state in Malaysia and eighth most popular.  There is a lot of history in Penang and that is why we chose to go there.  We stayed at the Eastern & Oriental Hotel located in Georgetown.  The hotel is one of Asia's truly great hotels with graceful elegance and storied colonial charm.  We stayed in the Heritage Wing which is the historical heart.  Built in 1885 bellhops welcome guests to it's 100 elegant suites.  Over it's century and a quarter history, the E & O Heritage Wing has played host to some of the world's most celebrated artists, writers and heads of state.  Attended by the E & O's legendary butler service each suite offers the perfect invitation to step back into the refined elegance and colonial grandeur of a golden age.

Panton chicken, this was great.

Georgetown, founded August 1786 by Captain Francis Light, is the capital of Penang, named after Britain's King George III.  Georgetown has been ranked as the most liveable city in Malaysia.

Took David to one of my favorite places. He said not quite "his thing".  He did have chocolate tea and said it was good.

Street Art

Chew Jetty - There were many of these jetty's around.  To live in this one you had to be a member of the Chew family.  These houses are built on the water and side by side.  They have water and electricity.

Penang Peranakan Mansion, this place had tons of history in it. It was built at the end of the 19th century by a local personality. Having survived many decades of neglect, the mansion has now been fully restored to its former grandeur of a stately home.

Fort Cornwallis

The chapel

Eating ice cream.  I was HOT to say the least.

War Museum - David's favorite, me, I was watching for snakes.  This military fortress built in 1930's by the British to protect the island from enemies.  The British Royal Engineers and a work force comprised of local labourers blasted and dug into the hill to create a fort with underground military tunnels, intelligence and logistic center, halls, offices, ventilation shafts, cannon firing bays, sleeping quarters, cook houses as well as medical infirmary.  This fort stayed hidden for 60 years.  The War Museum is about education, relic admiration and experiencing events of war.  They also had a spooky night tour.

Penang Hill, one of the oldest colonial hill stations established by the British during their time in Malaysia.  The highest point is 2,723 ft. above sea level.. The Penang Hill Funicular railway was the second mode of transportation for access to the summit.

Owl Museum, contains over 1000 rare and unique art and crafts collected from more than 20 countries.
